"With an anti-trans and broader anti-LGBT moral panic in full swing,
perpetuated by the media, I think it is worth going over some of the parallels
that exist between this and other moral panics. I think it is high time that we
examine the ways in which the media is guilty of enabling these moral panics
and adding fuel to the fire.
It should be obvious at this point that moral panics and mass societal outrage
don’t exist in a vacuum, and they don’t come about out of thin air. Clearly,
there is a reason why they exist and especially when you have legislation
constantly popping up with the intent of targeting a specific group of people.
Probably the first and most obvious way in which this is enabled by the media
at least is the way they selectively report on issues. In the case of trans
people and the trans moral panic, media reporting is overwhelmingly negative. A
lot of the time also it relies on reporting on the negative acts of a single
trans person and framing as though the person being trans was related or
essential to the crimes they committed.
A good example of this was what we have seen recently in the wake of the
shooting in Nashville. Reports have been highlighting the fact that the killer
was transgender when they would never do this when a shooter is not. This is
done constantly when it comes to reporting on trans people. If a trans person
wins a sporting event, attention is immediately put to a supposed advantage
they have. If a trans person commits a crime, attention is put to the fact that
the person was trans above all else."
