"Electric cars are amazing, aren’t they? Emissions-free, planet-friendly
motoring! Right? Well, while most EVs are better for the environment than their
gas-guzzling counterparts, they aren’t as eco-friendly as you might think.
Recent research finds that you need to travel around 20,000 miles in an EV
before its lifetime emissions are lower than those of an equivalent
combustion-engined vehicle. What’s more, because these EVs are incredibly heavy
and contain massive batteries, they are far too expensive for most people to
afford. This wasn’t the EV revolution we were promised. But the brilliant
people at Citroën seem to have solved this issue with their latest car, the Oli
(pronounced all-e).
The Oli is an electric concept car, and upon launching it, Citroën had this to
say: “Rather than being a 2,500kg ‘palace on wheels’ filled with screens and
gadgets, Oli proves that more can be achieved with less.” This sentiment of
doing more with less is not only a cornerstone of sustainability but also of
affordability, which are two things the auto industry simply isn’t prioritising
right now. If Citroën can pull off this approach, then the Oli could be utterly
revolutionary."
