"The wind kicks up in the heart of Fort Mojave territory, sending orange sand
across well-worn roads. Rain clouds threaten overhead.
Looking out a window from the Pipa Aha Macav Cultural Center, the brewing storm
obstructs a view of Avi Kwa Ame, or “Spirit Mountain” - a site sacred to
members of this Indigenous community in the southwestern United States.
“Our Creation story starts at Avi Kwa Ame,” says Nora McDowell, a project
coordinator at the cultural centre and former longtime chairwoman of the Fort
Mojave Indian Tribe, which counts about 1,400 members. “Today, you can’t see
it, but it’s there.”"
