"If there’s such a thing as “bike parking porn,” the Netherlands seems to
inspire the bulk of it. On YouTube, fans of cycling infrastructure can marvel
at a broad selection of video tours through cavernous bike garages in places
like Rotterdam, Amsterdam and especially Utrecht, a city of 362,000 whose train
station provides spots for 22,000 bicycles, the largest such facility in the
world.
These monumental garages have become integral to the Dutch transportation
network: Over 400,000 people — more than 40% of all train passengers — bike to
a station every weekday.
In the US, no Amtrak train station offers bike parking that remotely resembles
what Dutch travelers now take for granted. Americans cycling to a station can
either try to squeeze their bike onboard or chain it to an outdoor rack and
hope for the best. Only a few regional rail networks, like the Bay Area’s BART
and Portland’s TriMet, offer a limited amount of secure storage for bikes.
Building these eye-popping facilities in Dutch cities required years of careful
planning inspired by the profit motive as well as lofty aspirations to enliven
public space and reduce car trips. Other countries — including the US — could
learn a thing or two by studying how the Dutch pulled it off, and why."
