"When I read about the “population crisis” occurring in Japan and elsewhere, I
wonder: what am I missing?
There are around 73 million more humans on the planet than there were a year
ago and 1.5
billion more than there were in the year 2000. Every day, as of
2022, there are around 360,000 births compared to just 180,000 deaths.
Meanwhile, our cities are boiling, our lakes are drying up, the ice caps are
shriveling, and the Amazon is shrinking. And did I mention the traffic?
And yet, somehow, the population crisis we’re talking about is… population
decline?
It’s always seemed fairly obvious to me that
the challenges of population
growth are more perilous than the challenges of population decline, but
there’s a long history of national governments taking the opposite stance.
Let’s take a balanced look at what’s happening in Japan. Is there cause for
panic? Or, in the era of climate change, should we be welcoming population
decline with open arms?"
Cheers,
