"My country likes to talk a big game when it comes to Climate Change.
Canada has positioned itself as a leader when it comes to reducing pollution
and making strides toward a greener future. Our politicians just love to chat
us up about everything they’re thinking about doing about the problem.
They’re like that one drunk at the bar; he’s got all kinds of rosy ideas for
making it big, but he needs somebody to pay off his tab before he can really
take off.
Them fossil fuel execs just have so much cash to burn…But we’ll totally kick
them to the curb, we just need to build a couple more pipelines first.
Cha-ching!
As part of this big talk, every year the federal government puts together a
national report on our greenhouse gas emissions and what we’re doing to help
reduce the volume of what we produce and to mitigate the damage that those
emissions cause.
Keeping up a regular report on the subject, which is sent to the United
Nations, does seem to be providing our government with a teensy bit of
motivation.
I guess it’s like keeping a fitness journal to track your workout routine.
Every extra pushup is worth a pat on the back.
Now, as my readers know, I’m the kind of geek that unwinds by watching video
essays and documentaries. I love reading, I love learning, and I love
uncovering obscure tidbits of information and trivia.
On one of my little research deep dives, specifically into greenhouse gas
emissions — why yes, I am fun at parties — I stumbled on a statistic that I
found pretty interesting.
In the 2020 report, the federal government of Canada noted that about 23% of
our national methane output comes from landfills."
