"Tax season has come and gone for another year, and like the rest of you, I’ve
filled out my forms and driven myself thoroughly mad digging through paperwork
and receipts.
I hate math. Thank the gods for calculators.
Being self-employed is a bit of a pain in the backside, as it means keeping
track of everything on my own and manually reporting and accounting for every
dollar. Still, I do my best to make sure I don’t miss a single cent.
Taxes are important. In my country, our taxes help pay for everything from
education to universal healthcare, and the government pulls from the national
pool to ensure that our citizens have safety nets and protections when things
go wrong.
I think of it like having a massive truckload of roommates. We all chip in to
cover the rent so no one individual is stuck paying for everybody.
Part of belonging to a democratic society is doing your part to help your
fellow citizens. So, while taxes are a little bit of a pain, the result is
worth it.
Of course, there are other ways to help out your fellow humans. Many of us also
go out of our way to donate to charitable causes and support individual people
in need.
I have some feelings about where the government is dropping the ball and
leaving the ordinary citizen to pick it up, but even so. Charity is an awesome
thing to contribute to if you can afford it.
But you may be wondering, if I love that charities exist and that people give
money to them, what’s with the title of this article?
Good question."
Cheers,
