"Western Australia is a big state by landmass, but a small place in the context
of a global population teeming at more than eight billion people.

Fewer than three million souls live west of the Nullarbor, and its economy,
while critical to the national picture, is small fry.

Yet within WA's isolated borders, a story is unfolding that offers a window
into the tectonic shifts underway in the world's energy system and way of
living.

For the first time ever, a commodity synonymous with the transition to
renewable energy is poised to overtake fossil fuels as a revenue source for the
state.

Lithium, the metal that is the central ingredient for so many of the world's
batteries, is soon to be worth more to WA than oil, gas and coal combined."
