"Another week in U.K. politics and yet another week of increasingly dangerous
transphobia from the government — no surprises there. But this time they might
have let the mask slip just a little too much.
It’s political party-conference season in the U.K. and Prime Minister Rishi
Sunak, probably the most powerful man in the country, a man who, along with his
wife Akshata Murty, is estimated to be worth around £730 million (about $890
million), used the opportunity to announce that he’s being bullied by trans
women.
In his first conference speech since becoming Prime Minister (without a general
election being held, just like many fascists before him) Sunak took the
opportunity to make his most severe public attack on trans people, and
especially trans women, yet, stating:
“We shouldn’t get bullied into believing people can be any sex they want to be.
They can’t. A man, is a man, and a woman, is a woman, that is just common
sense.”
The most powerful man in the country has chosen to focus on one of the smallest
and most marginalised communities in the U.K., to pretend that we’re a threat.
At 0.1% of the population, trans women are just 48,000 adults in a country of
67,000,000. Trans men make up about the same. Non-binary people and those with
other gender identities (and I’m not even sure Sunak is aware that non-binary
people exist) make up 0.3%, or around 166,000 adults."
