"I have a new article out in the journal
Futures which draws on my
‘Australians’ Experiences of COVID-19′ project which has now spanned four years
of the pandemic. It reports findings from qualitative interviews conducted in
three sets, each with 40 Australian adults, in the pandemic years of 2020, 2021
and 2022. The total of 120 participants were from all around Australia, of
different ages and backgrounds. The final questions asked were: ‘What do you
think your way of life will be like once the COVID crisis has passed? Will it
go back to the way it was before – or be different in important ways?’. This
article analyses participants’ responses to these future-facing questions
across the three annual interview sets. Continuities and differences in the
imaginaries of pandemic futures expressed in each of these years are
identified.
The whole article can be found open access to read or download here. This blog
post summarises the main findings. I’ve also included some AI-generated images
that I made to illustrate the findings, as an experiment in research
translation. I used the Adobe Creative Cloud software with prompts that
requested an image in the style of a tarot card. I chose this style because
tarot cards are often used to predict the future – and that is exactly what I
was asking my participants to do."
