"The government-appointed inquiry into Australia’s COVID response has warned
public trust won’t be so high in a future pandemic and people would be unlikely
to accept again many of the measures taken.
“That means there is a job to be done to rebuild trust, and we must plan a
response based on the Australia we are today, not the Australia we were before
the pandemic,” the report released on Tuesday said.
The inquiry was conducted by former NSW public servant Robyn Kruk,
epidemiologist Catherine Bennett, and economist Angela Jackson. It examined the
health and economic responses; while it did not directly delve into the state
responses, it did cover the federal-state interface.
The overall takeout from the inquiry is that “Australia did well relative to
other nations, that experienced larger losses in human life, health system
collapse and more severe economic downturns”."
