'In a remote pocket of the Kimberley, Chris Henggeler has seen scorched dry
earth become a thriving oasis — an extraordinary transformation he credits
partly to a radical experiment with a maligned feral pest.
The pioneering land manager believes wild donkeys are helping to regenerate his
land, and says they could also revolutionise how the region manages bushfire
risk.
The West Australian government has issued a kill order for the donkeys, but
Chris would rather go to jail than shoot them. After a lengthy stoush, a final
legal hearing on his case begins this week.
"If the science is not on my side, I deserve to be locked up. And if the
science is on my side, I deserve an apology," he tells
Australian Story.
He is standing by his "landscape mission", even as he counts the "unacceptable"
cost to his family.
"Had I known the price that Jacquie and my children would have to pay for my
learning, I would not have embarked on this project," Chris says.'
Cheers,
