"HONOLULU (
HawaiiNewsNow) - You can now explore Hawaii’s stunning collection
of flora without ever leaving your computer.
The Bishop Museum and state Museum of Natural and Cultural History have
announced a “digitization milestone” — an online database that features
information on — and photos of — 180,000-plus specimens of Hawaiian plants.
View the database by navigating to PlantsOfHawaii.org.
The years-long effort to digitize Hawaii’s plants is part of Bishop Museum’s
Digital Futures Initiative to expand the museum’s digital operations.
“It’s vitally important that we understand and have a record of what plants we
have in Hawaii, and especially how invasive species have affected Native plants
over time,” said Tim Gallaher, Bishop Museum curator of botany.
The museum’s botany collection has more than 500,000 database entries."
