"Surrounded by concrete, in a low-ceilinged space that could optimistically
described as ‘intimate’, musicians sit with bows poised, mouthpieces at the
ready. They’re here to perform a prom, but this is a long way from South
Kensington – and that’s the point.
This is a car park in Peckham, south London, and this is The Multi-Story
Orchestra. The pioneering ensemble has made a habit of performing in
unconventional spaces, notably multi-storey car parks, in a bid to bring
classical music to young people who may not otherwise encounter it. Founded in
2011 by composer Kate Whitley and conductor Christopher Stark, it’s seen young
musicians tour throughout the UK – collaborating with local choirs and
instrumentalists along the way – while maintaining a strong connection to its
native south-east London.
This autumn, the orchestra has been performing a show called
Verified as part
of the Southbank Centre’s autumn/winter classical programme. Featuring a set of
songs written by the orchestra’s own artists, as well as a new script by
Peckham-based playwright Montel Douglas, it explores the search for acceptance
and authenticity in the digital age."
