"There are many important lessons to be learned from the Covid-19 response to
better deal with the next pandemic, but we are unlikely to learn them if our
memories of the pandemic are distorted by a refusal to acknowledge what we did
well.

The release of the report of the first phase of the Royal Commission into the
Covid-19 Response provides an opportunity to begin taking stock of those
lessons and implementing the 39 recommendations laid out by the inquiry.

Instead, the focus from political leaders and commentators alike has been
rear-facing, cherry picking parts of the report to construct a narrative that
downplays the ultimate success of New Zealand’s pandemic response. Conventional
wisdom in 2024 seems to dictate that the Covid-19 response was an overreaction,
but that conventional wisdom is wrong."
