"Last Thursday RFK Jr. became the US Health and Human Services Director,
immediately beginning the dismantling of federal science and health programs
and firing nearly 3,000 NIH and CDC employees (and over 5,000 at HHS),
including key scientists that are essential in pandemic prevention. Tuesday he
announced his commission will soon “investigate” vaccines as part of its
mission.
As before: the US CDC pause on external communications continues with limited
exceptions, and subject to Trump admin approval. After the Morbidity and
Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) resumed omitting bird flu information due to be
released, one of the withheld studies was published, showing that veterinarians
have been getting infected from cows. The new human case in Wyoming is still in
hospital; CDC does not list the human case reported by Ohio officials as
confirmed.
The Texas measles outbreak has exploded and expanded into New Mexico. The CDC
measles page hasn't been updated since Feb 7. The TB outbreak in Kansas and
Missouri is ongoing.
Reports for a second week state flu deaths have surpassed Covid deaths.; A new
study from BU and UPenn showed many US excess deaths attributed to natural
causes are (and have been) uncounted Covid deaths or deaths driven by Covid
infections. In addition, in January 2023 the CDC revised Covid death
classification, lowering counts by 10-20%. So many Americans died from Covid
2020-2023 that it boosted Social Security by $205 billion."
