'Removing gas appliances is big business for Brendan.
His company, appropriately titled Get Off Gas, helps Melbourne home owners to
disconnect their gas hot water, gas heating and gas cooktops and switch to
electric versions, as well as install solar or electric car chargers.
"We're known as one-stop shop. So we facilitate the transition from
fossil-fuelled or gas-fuelled appliances to electric appliances within the
home, he says.
And why are most people calling Brendan?
"The main motivator is to save money. Often the first call I get is 'we just
got a $900 gas bill, can you please help?' And that's generally related to
their heating in winter," he explains.
Home owners are supported to buy new electric appliances or disconnect gas ones
with rebates from the Victorian government, and there are more and more people
like Brendan helping households get off gas.
But not everyone is on board. A new analysis claims the fossil fuel lobby is
running a sophisticated 'playbook', tapping into the fears of Australians to
keep households hooked on gas.
