Lesbian Space Princess was always going to be the title of Leela Varghese
and Emma Hough Hobbs' first film.
Emma was in the shower when the title — and nothing else — suddenly came to
her.
"I ran out, dripping, and I was like: 'Babe, I got it'!"
Leela says she initially took the proclamation as a joke, noting her girlfriend
literally "had a towel on her head", but the couple soon turned a "very camp,
ridiculous and very literal title" into an adult animation with laughs, thrills
and "a lot of heart and meaning".
Now, the pair's debut has been selected for the coveted Berlin International
Film Festival, the only Australian feature film to make the cut in a program
that includes the premiere of
Parasite director Bong Joon-ho's hotly
anticipated
Mickey 17.
Lesbian Space Princess, produced by Adelaide's We Made A Thing Studios, is
also thought to be the first full-length animated feature made in the state,
with an impressive cast including Richard Roxburgh (
Rake), Kween Kong
(
RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under), Shabana Azeez (
Birdeater), Gemma Chua-Tran
(
Heartbreak High) and Madeleine Sami (
Deadloch) to boot.
We caught up with the Kaurna/Adelaide pair to hear more about making a
full-length animated feature on a shoestring budget, in a male-dominated
industry, as a queer couple.'
