"NORTH LAWNDALE — A new exhibit in a North Lawndale pop-up museum invites West
Side families to explore the role of trees in the area and across the city
ahead of Earth Day.
“ReCovered: Chicago’s Urban Tree Canopy” is on display at the Lawndale Pop-Up
Spot, 3601 W. Douglas Blvd., through April 26. It is the first exhibit of the
year for the Pop-Up Spot, a seasonal mini-museum that displays exhibits on and
inside metal shipping containers.
ReCovered takes a look at how the distribution of trees across the city
impacts the environment and correlates with other disparities. Trees function
in neighborhoods to improve air quality, reduce temperatures, prevent flooding
and ultimately improve resident well-being, according to the exhibit.
University of Chicago data exploring the issue of “tree equity” across the city
shows areas of thinned tree canopy across the South and Near West sides.
While areas in North Lawndale have less than 2000 trees and around 10 percent
tree canopy coverage, neighborhoods such as Forest Glen and Beverly both have
areas with more than 13,000 trees and around 50 percent tree canopy coverage,
according to UChicago data. The difference in tree canopy correlates with
higher surface temperatures on the West, Southwest and Northwest sides of the
city.
The exhibit uses the lens of Chicago’s tree canopy cover to look at disparities
in temperature, air quality, redlining, median household income and crime. A
transparent glass map of the city’s tree canopy floats on a sliding hinge in
front of maps of each disparity across the city, allowing the viewer to see how
the issues potentially relate."
