"Last week in Sydney, we saw a melodrama acted out that could stand in for the
state of Australian universities more generally. Inside Sydney’s swish
Fullerton Hotel, a glittering cast of vice-chancellors, politicians, public
servants, journalists, and consultants deliberated at a higher education
summit, sponsored by the Australian Financial Review and consultancy Nous
Group.

Teaching-only casual staff, who do the bulk of teaching in many universities,
were not represented in the official line up of speakers. Instead, academics
and students remained outside, protesting in the rain against staff cuts and
governance issues facing the sector."

Via Muse, who wrote:

"In the 80s I started university and immediately watched my university begin to
crumble under President Reagan. When I returned to university in the 90s, at an
Australian university, I was at the centre of a controversy with several other
students whereby one department was trying to hijack my PhD in order to gain
more corporate money and status. The department in which I was lecturing was
also compromised by the big deal they made with Apple for “free” computers.

I hope people take note of this article."
