“Matt Ellis and Kate Tucker had always dreamed of running away to the country —
even when they were trying to climb onto the property ladder in inner-city
Melbourne.
But everywhere they tried to buy in the city, they were outbid.
"We couldn't afford to live where our community was, where all our friends
were," Kate says in the new series of
Grand Designs Australia.
That's how the self-described folk-singing bohemians ended up with a
1.5-hectare plot of land in early 2019, just outside the eclectic community of
Cygnet, 40 minutes away from Hobart.
At $330,000, it was far cheaper than any of their options in Victoria's
capital.
It also came with greater design freedom, enabling them to pursue another of
their long-held dreams: crafting their very own "earthships".
The couple planned to use the sprawling block for at least two ambitious homes
inspired by the earthship building movement that took off in the desert of New
Mexico in the 1970s — one for Kate and Matt and their two children, and an
identical one next door for Matt's Dad."”
Cheers,
