"Something significant just happened in London at the United Nations maritime
peak body, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
Nations had gathered to adopt the
Net-Zero Framework, a package of measures
designed to accelerate maritime decarbonisation.
When the
Net-Zero Framework was agreed upon at the IMO in April 2025 it was a
positive step forward, but it was arguably more of a victory for
multilateralism than for the environment.
It fell well short of aligning with the IMO’s
2023 GHG Strategy, which set
the vision for net-zero greenhouse gas emission from the shipping sector “by or
around 2050,” plus indicative checkpoints to cut total annual GHGs by at least
20% (striving 30%) by 2030 and at least 70% (striving 80%) by 2040."
