"The ongoing COP30 in Belém, Brazil (2025) has once again drawn the world’s
attention towards the planet’s future. Taking place in the heart of the Amazon
Basin, one of the world’s most vital ecosystems, the conference also carries a
symbolic weight. It marks thirty years since the first COP and a decade since
the adoption of the
Paris Agreement. These milestones underscore how far
climate diplomacy has come. But we still have a long way to go.
As usual, COP30 would include debates over rising global temperatures,
persistent shortfalls in climate finance, curtailing accelerated biodiversity
loss, and the urgent need to turn commitments into concrete action. But there
are additional challenges as well. There is also global economic stagnation,
geopolitical tensions, constrained fiscal space, and increasing international
fragmentation that might stifle the climate momentum. As the official
negotiations carry on, a wave of reports have be released, and countless side
events have been organized. Various initiatives would also be discussed that
would seek to maintain momentum to push the conversation toward tangible and
measurable progress.
For the past 30 years, the Conference of the Parties (COP) has been bringing
together nearly every country on Earth to assess progress and negotiate the
collective response to global warming. The COPs are the main global forum where
science, economics, and diplomacy intersect in the ongoing search for a
sustainable and equitable future for the planet."
