"The specter of covid-19 continues to loom large over the United States.
Research out today finds that the viral illness is still sickening and killing
a substantial number of Americans every year.
Scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and others
examined surveillance data on covid-19 dating back to 2022. They estimated that
covid-19 has annually caused millions of visits to the doctor, around a million
hospitalizations, and roughly 100,000 deaths as of late. Covid-19 has been
especially harmful to Americans over 65, highlighting the need for continued
interventions such as booster vaccine shots, the researchers and other experts
say.
“Although the Public Health Emergency for covid-19 ended in May 2023, this
study suggests that covid-19 remains a major driver of mortality and hospital
use among older adults,” David C. Grabowski, a professor of health care policy
at Harvard Medical School who is not affiliated with the study, told
Gizmodo."
