Newsroom contributes
to a better understanding around the evidentiary ground beneath Winston Peters’
decision to reject vital, and urgent updates to global health regulations that
were “particularly beneficial to smaller nations with less capacity, including
Pacific Island countries because of their vulnerability to outbreaks and
climate-sensitive diseases”. Officials did not reject the WHO
International
Health Regulations amendments because they found a sovereignty risk. They
found the opposite. MFAT backed the amendments, set out practical benefits for
New Zealand and the Pacific, and told the Foreign Minister directly that New
Zealand would keep control over its own domestic health policy. And yet, Peters
rejected the amendments regardless, and then presented that rejection as a
defence of New Zealand against the UN.
Read against half a decade of research into how these claims travel
(particularly within New Zealand), Peters’ decision (which is to say, the New
Zealand government’s decision) looks less like a technical treaty judgment than
the conversion of a long-running disinformation frame into ministerial action.
WHO hostility has, since at least 2022, sat inside a wider anti-UN, anti-WEF,
anti-mandate and anti-public-health ecology.
Research on New Zealand’s anti-vaccine, disinformation and far-right media
ecologies turns up a constellation of conspiratorial narratives far more
durable than any single claim. WHO-targeting works as a grammar of distrust.
The World Health Organization becomes an unelected foreign authority in Geneva,
fused almost interchangeably with the UN, the WEF, Bill Gates, Pfizer, “Big
Pharma”, digital identity systems, central bank digital currencies, climate
governance, “One Health”, vaccine passports and a shadowy “globalist” hand
behind all of it. Early Covid-era material read WHO guidance as proof that New
Zealand had surrendered its public-health sovereignty. Ardern, Bloomfield, the
Ministry of Health, mainstream media and medical regulators were cast as local
agents of something larger – lockdowns, mandates, border controls, PCR
manipulation, concealed vaccine injury, depopulation, sterilisation,
experimental gene therapy, “crimes against humanity”. The pandemic treaty and
the
International Health Regulations then handed the ecology a concrete
policy object."
