"You can tell how much a society values women by how much it prioritizes their
pleasure, and I don't just mean in bed, though that turns out to be a
remarkably honest place to start looking. A culture that treats a woman's body
as something that exists for her own satisfaction is, as a rule, a culture that
extends her some version of that same logic everywhere else. Autonomy over
land, over labor, over her own children, over whether she stays married to
someone. A culture that treats her pleasure as irrelevant, or worse, as
dangerous, tends to extend that logic everywhere else too.
Colonial America in the 1600s and 1700s had two systems running side by side.
Puritan society, where sex was a procreative duty and a woman’s satisfaction
did not register as a category worth discussing. And a number of Native
American societies, where female sexual autonomy was an accepted,
parent-sanctioned norm, alongside legal autonomy, property rights, and the
ability to leave a bad marriage without asking anyone’s permission.
Colonial women got to make that comparison, and a significant number of them
chose Native life over their own. Not once. Repeatedly, across decades, across
colonies, with women being recaptured and escaping again. They were telling
Puritan society something, as clearly as a person can tell you something
without ever publishing a word. Give us autonomy. Give us a say in our own
pleasure, our own property, our own marriages, and we will stay.
The reaction of the Puritan men is a shining example of how religious white
males handle everything: poorly."
