"Somewhere in a mid-century Detroit paint booth, a gemstone was forming. Nobody
noticed for forty years.
Cars were painted by hand back then. Whatever missed the body settled on the
racks and skids below, one thin coat at a time.
Then the whole rig rolled into the oven, car and overspray together, and
everything baked hard. The next car added another layer. The deepest layers got
baked a hundred times.
Eventually the buildup grew thick enough to get in the way, so workers chipped
it off and threw it out. It was factory grime. Nothing more.
Then somebody cut a piece open. Fordite was born."
