"Before the internet had a name, a scattered group of engineers, researchers,
and (frankly) misfits were figuring out how you make machines talk to one
another across distance.
They worked in university basements and defense labs, punching cards, writing
protocols by hand, and shipping silicon between institutions. Every artifact
here represents a first principle. The 80-column format on a 1959 punch card
still defines your terminal width. A handwritten logbook entry recording the
first two characters ever sent between networked computers. A silicon wafer
whose designs traveled over the ARPANET before the chips traveled by mail.
These are the foundations on which everything else was built, made by people
who were inventing the rules as they went."
