"Every serious conversation about AI ends up in the same place: someone brings
up the jobs, someone else brings up Universal Basic Income, and a third person
says something about learning to code, realizes what they just said, and goes
quiet.
That's the exact conversation I had with some friends last night, when we met
for evening drinks. It's hot as hell where I live, so ice cold drinks before
bed seemed like the right thing to do.
Intense heat, ice, water, lack of water, climate change, and eventually AI. A
logical progression. And if we talk AI, we talk jobs. It's almost inevitable.
We pledge allegiance to it or blame it for all the ills of society for a while,
then gradually everyone agrees it's going to be fine, or it's going to be
catastrophic, and orders another drink.
But the actual question underneath all of this is more interesting than either
answer. What happens to an economy, a country, a person, when work stops being
the thing that organizes a life?
And I don't mean it in the sci-fi sense — we're past that point. I mean it in
the boring daily life sense, the one where you wake up at 10, nobody needs you
anywhere, and the rest of the day is yours to figure out what a day even is."
