"It has a constitution. It has courts. It has prosecutors, investigators,
ministries, regulations, permits, forms, stamps, signatures, inspections, and
procedures for every imaginable part of life.
But when real power enters the room, the law often quietly leaves.
A poor person may be crushed by a missing document. A small business may be
destroyed by one inspection. A mother may spend months trying to prove that her
wounded son is entitled to compensation. But if a powerful man wants someone's
company, apartment, freedom, or silence, the law can suddenly become very
flexible.
And ordinary Russians know this.
That is why many of them do not respect the law. They fear punishment. They
fear being caught. They fear the official behind the desk. But if they believe
they can bypass the law safely and benefit from it, many will do exactly that.
Russians are not uniquely corrupt or rebellious by nature. For centuries,
Russian history taught them a brutal lesson: law is not a shield for everyone.
Law is a weapon in the hands of power, a trap for the weak, and an obstacle to
climb over if you possibly can.
Today, we are going to talk about why law in Russia so often feels like a trap
instead of protection."
