"Tēnā koutou people of New Zealand,
I have been told to “go home to where you came from” countless times through my
nearly seven decades here - from my very early memories to just last week, and
many of the days, weeks, months, and years in between.
When I was young and didn’t understand it was easy to follow my father’s advice
- just ignore it. Then I began to understand; and it started to hurt. Then I
understood even more; and it hurt ever more.
And, yes, it continues to hurt.
My mother Aye was in her late-teens and my father Bapu in his early 20s when
they came to settle in Aotearoa (then New Zealand). With little formal
education, no qualifications and little English, far from any family and little
prospect of any immediate contact with (or return to) them, Bapu and Aye came
to settle in a land that would have been, quite literally, foreign to them.
Their reasons for coming were simple: to provide for their - future - family
opportunities that they themselves did not get.
As early as I can remember Bapu and Aye (lovingly) drummed into us a simple
message: go to school and get an education.
And, so I did."
