"If you use a trans person’s preferred name or call them by their requested
pronouns, then you are more likely to support political violence, a new report
commissioned by the Department of Health and Human Services claims.
It adds to a growing body of pseudoscientific literature that has been
manufactured by the right and used to justify attacks on the LGBTQ community.
The report, titled “Where the Clinic Meets the Movement: Does Gender Ideology
Arm Left-Wing Authoritarian Psychology?”, is based on a survey that polled over
1,200 Americans. It claims to gauge respondents’ support of “the official
positions of clinical institutions” on gender-affirming care—institutions like
the American Psychiatric Association and the World Professional Association for
Transgender Health—and on participants’ propensity towards what these
researchers call “left-wing authoritarianism.”
The report draws on these answers to market the argument that “gender ideology”
acts as an “accelerant” for “political violence.” But the report doesn’t
actually measure what it says it does. Like much of Trumpian science, it uses
methodologically indefensible tactics to fuel a transparently predetermined,
ideological outcome.
“This so-called study, sponsored by an extreme right-wing advocacy
organization, is another example of the outcome leading the research - MAGA
Republicans want to sow hatred against our fellow Americans in a desperate
attempt to distract from their failures ahead of the midterms,” Kelley
Robinson, president of the Human Rights Campaign, said.
The survey does not indicate whether it was governed by oversight from an
institutional review board (IRB). It was not published in a journal. It did not
undergo peer review. And it is tied to conservative advocacy groups like the
Network Contagion Research Institute as well as the Manhattan Institute, whose
staffer Leor Sapir also co-authored the HHS’ widely condemned “Gender Dysphoria
Report.”
Based on responses, researchers weighed participants’ opinions on a “Clinical
Gender Affirmation Scale,” which they claim measures support of major medical
groups’ guidelines for treating transgender patients. In actuality, the survey
simply asked about the perceived importance of respecting transgender people
through name and pronoun usage, not gender-affirming pharmacological or
surgical care.
One question does not even contain an opinion at all. It simply states the
well-established fact that rejecting a trans person’s gender identity causes
“psychological distress.”"
