"Environmental groups have decried the first flows of fossil gas from the
Beetaloo Basin in the Northern Territory, describing the project as reliant on
“massive” subsidies that will detonate a “carbon bomb” should it ever proceed
at scale.
The first gas will begin feeding into the NT’s grid this week from the project
500 kilometres south of Darwin, eight years after the territory lifted a
moratorium on the fracking.
NT chief minister Lia Finocchiaro on Tuesday headed up a ceremonial ribbon
cutting event to mark the flow of first gas from the Beetaloo Sub-basin,
declaring the moment as “a win for all Territorians and a true turning point
for the Territory.”
“This project means Territory gas powering Territory homes, businesses and
industry,” the Chief Minister said.
The timing of the announcement is awkward on the diplomatic front, with Prime
Minister Anthony Albanese attending the Pacific Island Forum in Palau. Climate
change is among the agenda’s main topics, with many Pacific communities
particularly at risk from sea-level rise.
Global sea-surface temperatures last month hit record levels, according to
Europe’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, and some commentators are
predicting a record strong El Nino weather event in the Pacific have raised the
odds that this year – and almost certainly 2027 – will melt annual global
temperature records.
“Declaring the Beetaloo’s first gas flow a turning point is a sick joke,” said
Amanda McKenzie, Climate Council chief executive, in a statement. “This is a
climate bomb. Gas from the Beetaloo could unleash climate pollution more than
three times Australia’s annual domestic pollution over the next two decades.”"
