"In Christine Anu’s seminal hit,
My Island Home, originally performed by the
Warumpi Band, she pays tribute to saltwater people and the family ties that
bind traditional cultures at Australia’s northernmost tip.
But these days, the soil of low-lying islands such as Saibai Island in the
Torres Strait – where Anu’s mother and maternal ancestors were born – contains
so much saltwater from rising sea levels that few crops will grow in it.
“Those islands have always been low-lying, and as the waters are rising it’s
just eating away very quickly at the edges of the island,” Anu said.
“And that’s what worries me because if we don’t have a home, how do we practise
our culture? What do my children’s children have, to be shown what their
heritage is?”"
