"When the FIFA World Cup hits North America in June 2026, 48 teams and millions
of soccer fans will be traveling to and from venues spread across the United
States, Canada and Mexico.

It’s a dramatic expansion – 16 more teams will be playing than in recent years,
with a jump from 64 to 104 matches. The tournament is projected to bring in
over US$10 billion in revenue. But the expansion will also mean a lot more
travel and other activities that contribute to climate change.

The environmental impacts of giant sporting events like the World Cup create a
complex paradox for an industry grappling with its future in a warming world."
