"Covid infection may make blood vessels age faster – particularly in women –
according to new international research that included Australian patients.
The study, published in the
European Heart Journal, found that people who had
been infected with Covid had stiffer arteries than those who had never been
infected, even up to a year later.
This stiffening, known as vascular ageing, is linked to a higher risk of heart
attack, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.
Lead researcher Professor Rosa Maria Bruno from Universite Paris Cite, France
said much had been learned about the long-term effects of Covid on the body.
“However, we are still learning what’s happening in the body to create these
symptoms,” she said.
“We know that Covid can directly affect blood vessels. We believe that this may
result in what we call early vascular ageing, meaning that your blood vessels
are older than your chronological age and you are more susceptible to heart
disease.
“If that is happening, we need to identify who is at risk at an early stage to
prevent heart attacks and strokes.”"
