"US pharmaceutical giant Moderna says it will deliver Australians the first
batch of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines from its taxpayer-funded Melbourne plant by the
end of this year as it unveiled plans to produce four other respiratory
vaccines from the site over the next three years.
Facing growing pushback against vaccines from the Trump administration in its
home market in the United States, Moderna will on Tuesday talk up the economic
benefits for Australia from the billions of dollars invested in the southern
hemisphere’s only mRNA facility.
The US pharmaceutical giant commissioned a report by Oxford Economics that
found the plant would save Australia up to $4.8 billion over 30 years which
would otherwise be spent on importing vaccines, lockdowns and health impacts if
there was another pandemic.
Michael Azrak, the general manager of Moderna’s Australian and New Zealand
operations, confirmed the first commercial vaccines from the plant would be
available at the end of this year.
“The plant is now right in the midst of producing its first commercial batch of
what will be the latest COVID vaccine, which we will deliver to Australians at
the end of this year,” Azrak told
The Australian Financial Review.
Under criticism for Australia’s slow vaccine rollout during the pandemic, the
Morrison government signed a 10-year deal with Moderna in May 2022 to build the
factory at Monash University’s Clayton campus with capacity to produce up to
100 million doses a year in the event of another health emergency."
