"Earlier this month, Jeff Bezos ordered layoffs for a third of
The Washington
Post’s news staff. This comes a year after he killed the paper’s planned
endorsement of Kamala Harris, leading to hundreds of thousands of subscription
cancellations totaling tens of millions in revenue. Last week’s layoffs
included 14 out of 19 of the paper’s climate staff.
Now, the same Americans who were outraged over the non-endorsement policy — and
decided to stop funding the newspaper — are being primed for righteous
indignation over the firing of climate staff. Click. Gape. Repeat.
The layoffs were a business decision that caused some editors to quit rather
than deliver the news to their own staff. The climate desk was
disproportionately impacted, and that could be because the climate section
doesn’t bring in revenue. The entire sports desk was also eliminated. These
layoffs follow similar moves by
CBS and the
Los Angeles Times last year.
Newspapers are for-profit endeavors, and everyone who works for them knows
that.
I consider myself a climate activist, so it took me a while to muster the
courage to say these words out loud: I’d fire them all, too. But I’d do it
because of their reporting.
Because it fails to meet the moment. America’s
legacy news media congratulate themselves, cry over themselves, and give
themselves Pulitzer Prizes while the world burns."
